Why am I getting an error when adding account code 477 “salaries” in Xero?

(For: Xero Payroll Setup – Chart of Accounts)

If you’re trying to add a new account in Xero with the code 477 and the name "Salaries," and you’re receiving an error, don’t worry — this is a common issue with a simple fix.

Xero is likely giving you a code/name error because account code 477 already exists in the system. In the Demo Company, account 477 is a default account called Wages and Salaries, which is commonly used as the Wages Expense Account during payroll setup.

Xero does not allow duplicate account codes, which is why you’re unable to create a new one using the same code.

What should you do instead:

There’s no need to create account 477 — you can simply use the existing one. To locate it:

  1. Go to the Accounting menu
  2. Click Advanced > Chart of accounts
  3. Use the search bar to type in 477, then click Search

Once found, you can select it when setting up payroll or assigning it to the appropriate field in your course exercise.

If you can’t see account 477, it might be because:

  • You’re not working in the Demo Company
  • The account was accidentally deleted or renamed
